Do You Want to Be a Tree Farmer?

July 19, 2014  |   9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

The Vermont Tree Farm program, in conjunction with the UVM Extension Forester, the Vermont Woodlands Association, and the NorthWoods Stewardship Center, are offering this workshop aimed at individuals who are presently enrolled in Vermont’s Current Use program who may be interested in becoming certified Tree Farmers. Find out the benefits of being a Tree Farmer and the fairly simple process of enrolling in the program. Also learn about the “My Land Plan” resource for landowners and see forest stewardship activities taking place at NorthWoods. Come prepared for a short walk outdoors as part of the program.

The American Tree Farm System, first organized in 1941, is the Nation’s oldest certifier of privately owned forestland. Tree Farm members share a unique commitment to protecting watersheds and wildlife habitat, conserving soil, and providing recreation; and at the same time producing wood products on a sustainable basis. Vermont has 475 Certified Tree Farms managing a total of about 200,000 acres. Among this number there are nearly twenty who have been Tree Farmers for more than fifty years and many more are twenty-five year land stewards in Tree Farm. The NorthWoods Stewardship Center’s 1480-acre Spitzer Demonstration Forest was enrolled as a Tree Farm in February 2014.
