Two-time Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Cassandra Wilson has been named "America’s Best Singer" by Time Magazine. Wilson is known for her throaty contralto – and her remarkable ability to stretch and bend pitches, elongate syllables, and manipulate tone and timbre from dusky to hollow. Critic Gary Giddens describes Cassandra Wilson as “a singer blessed with an unmistakable timbre and attack who has expanded the playing field” by incorporating country, blues, and folk music into her work.
