Snowshoe and Yoga Adventure

Cost: $15. We will start the morning with a moderate snowshoe trek on the NorthWoods trails where we tune our senses to the winter woods (approximately 1.5 miles on snowshoe). Then, we’ll have tea by the fire, as we roll out yoga mats for a beginner to intermediate level yoga session lead by Tina Ghantous Maher. Tina has been teaching yoga in the Northeast Kingdom for four years. This adventure offers the combination of exploring the peaceful woods, creating body heat and circulation, followed by a yoga session designed to explore your inner landscape. Through breath, movement, and meditation, this practice will align, open, and revitalize every part of you. Get ready to feel good. Kingdom Coffeehouse: Howie Cantor and Friends

He is currently working with friends on his fourth album Places, with songs that are inspired by places on the planet as well as places in the mind. Howie will record the songs in the musical styles of the places the songs are about including a polka from the Italian Alps, a Klezmer song that tells a story of 19th century Poland, A Dixieland tune remembering a trip to New Orleans, and a Puerto Rican folksong. Wildlife Winter Survival Strategies

Have you ever wondered how turtles survive winter in Vermont? This and many other winter wildlife wonders will be explained by Vermont Fish and Wildlife Biologist Paul Hamelin, who will touch upon the fascinating strategies used by a range of wildlife (reptiles, amphibians, insects, fish, birds, and mammals) to endure and even prosper in our extreme northern winters. The presentation will include an hour slide presentation, followed (weather permitting) by a short outing to look at signs of wildlife on the NorthWoods trails. Appropriate for ages 10 to adult. Snowshoes are available. This presentation is sponsored jointly by NorthWoods Stewardship Center and Vermont Woodlands Association.

Skiing Naturalist: Bears and Beech Trees

Cost: $5. Come trek along the beautiful NorthWoods trails in the second of three adventure naturalist events offered this winter. We’ll look for signs of animals, in snow and on trees, along moderate trails through the NorthWoods forest. We’ll head for Beech Ridge, where signs of Black Bear are recorded in the smooth bark. Afterward, enjoy a fire and some hot cocoa in the lodge as the sky turns dark. Skis available.

Journey Across Northern India by Plane, Train, Car and Riverboat

Annual Lyndon/Burke Snowflake Festival





The Lyndon/Burke Snowflake Festival is held annually in February. This event has been chosen in the past as a Top 10 Winter Event by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce.  It starts on the 15th with a pancake breakfast and later in the day, the Burke Wine & Art Snowcase.  The Festival features 2 full weeks of fun for kids and adults including ski races, torchlight parade, spaghetti suppers, skating, winter biking, quilt show, snow sculpture contest and more! Don’t miss the Chowderfest and Silent Auction on Saturday February 22nd at the Lyndon Outing Club. Burke Wine & Art Snowcase

Moonlight Ski and Snowshoe

Kingdom Trails will host a 1/2 mile self-guided, torchlit trail ski or snowshoe from the Darling Hill Nordic Center on the Bemis Trail. Bring a headlamp as the torches provide enough light to guide your way, but not enough to make out details.

When you arrive, check in at the Darling Hill Nordic Center for directions- or simply make your way to Bemis and head up to Junction #13 where you’ll find a fire and hot chocolate to warm you up.

Members and Day Pass holders are free. All others. $5.

Owl Moon at Burke Mtn

Great for the whole family and designed to capture the attention of kids and kids at heart! NorthWoods Stewardship Center will share a captivating slideshow about the owls that make their year-round or seasonal home in Vermont. How many eyelids does an owl have? Where are its ears? And, how do they fly so silently? Find the answers to these questions, and discover other unique adaptations and characteristics of this fascinating species. A special guest appearance by Oberon, a rehabilitated barred owl who has lived in a mew at NorthWoods for the past 8 years, will provide participants a rare opportunity to see these features up close. Following the indoor presentation, NorthWoods staff will share the story, “Owl Moon” by Jane Yolden and head out on snowshoes for a short trek and a chance to do some owling of our own.
