Kroka Expeditions: Where Consciousness Meets Wilderness

Fee: $5/suggested donation
In late March, students from Kroka Expeditions arrive at NorthWoods after skiing nearly 300 miles along the Catamount Trail. They set up camp at NorthWoods for three weeks, learning about the forest, crafting brown ash pack baskets, and preparing for their return sojourn home. This year, they’ll travel a new route, west through Vermont via waterways, and adding a bicycle tour to complete the 600-mile plus journey through New England. Whether you know a teenager who would thrive in this educational setting, or just want to see it for yourself, come join the students as they share images, stories and lessons learned on this incredible journey.

Le Vent du Nord
7:30 PM

Reserved seats: $32, $22, $15. Students $10.Presented by Kingdom County Productions and Lyndon State College (LSC) to celebrate the April 19th inauguration of LSC president Joseph Bertolini.

Quebec’s Le Vent du Nord knows how to turn the lost past into intense and beautiful performances that push their traditional roots in striking global directions that make the music dynamic and totally up-to-the minute. Considered a driving force in progressive folk, Le Vent du Nord captures the playful energy and mirth of a Saturday night kitchen party, infusing old Québec with a breath of fresh, cosmopolitan air.
Since its founding in 2002, Le Vent du Nord have become compelling Francophone ambassadors, winning critical acclaim and audience adoration across Europe and North America. The quartet has performed more than 1,000 concerts, racking up several prestigious awards, including two Junos (Canada’s Grammys), a Canadian Folk Music Award, and 'Artist of the Year' at the North American Folk Alliance Annual Gala.

Band members Nicolas Boulerice, Simon Beaudry, Oliver Demers, and Réjean Brunet, deliver catchy songs and tunes, some taken from the Québec traditional folk repertoire while others are original compositions. The group is known worldwide for its tight polished musical arrangements, soaring vocals, joie de vivre step-dancing, four-part a cappella harmonies, and rich and varied instrumentation performed on a variety of at least nine instruments including fiddles, guitars, the bodhran, bones, jaw harp and hurdy-gurdy.

In addition to their traditional repertoire, the group exhibits great finesse and flexibility, appearing regularly on Canadian, American, French, and UK television and radio, and participating in a wide variety of special musical projects. They’ve collaborated and performed with Harry Manx, Väsen, The Chieftains, Breton musical pioneer Yann-Fañch Kemener, Québecois roots legend and master storyteller Michel Faubert, hip Scottish folk band Breabach, and the trans-Mediterranean ensemble Constantinople. Not content with standard approaches to tradition, Le Vent du Nord have also created a symphonic concert, presented by the respected Portland Symphony Orchestra and Québec Symphony Orchestra, that “puts all traditional folk naysayers to shame” (Voir Montreal). This concert will be presented again with The Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra in April 2013.

A Le Vent du Nord concert quickens the pulse and gets feet tapping even as it stirs emotions and touches the heart and soul.
