Join us Sat March 22nd 12-4 at the cabin in the sugarwoods at Chandler Pond Farm for our 3rd Annual Community Sugaring Party and Potluck. Pitz Quattrone, one of the world’s recognized masters of the Didgeridoo, will perform a lively, fun filled and educational concert unlike any your students have ever seen. 3 TREES is a revolutionary world music trio featuring Pitz Quattrone on- Didgeridoo/Yidaki, Tom Chess on - Oud, Ney, Morsing, Mbira & Voice and Jon Seligman on - Percussion & Voice. 3 Trees describes themselves as "Earthy Spirit Music.” Original, improvised and traditional Near-East compositions are all part of the repertoire performed by 3 Trees. 3 Trees released a new CD July 2012 which is getting great international reviews and airplay on NPR.

Ben Falk: Permaculture and Resilient Farm Design

Ben Falk is the founder of Whole Systems Design, a Mad River Valley-based landscape consulting firm that offers permaculture design courses and other “reskill” trainings to equip people with the capacity to grow their own food, medicine, and fuel; plan and develop a resilient home infrastructure; and cultivate a high level of self-reliance while creating durable and vibrant livelihoods for themselves and their family. Falk is the author of Resilient Farm and Homestead: An Innovative Permaculture and Whole Systems Design Approach and will lecture about permaculture and resilient farm design.

Nulhegan Pond and Bog Exploration

The Nulhegan Basin is well known as a remote landscape with an abundance of wildlife, including many rare-to-Vermont boreal species of birds, such as spruce grouse, black-backed woodpecker, and gray jays. We’ll cross in an out of the Nulhegan Basin Division of the Silvio O.Conte National Wildlife Refuge as we explore, beginning with a visit to the Refuge Visitor Station where we will get our bearings for the day. Check out the carnivorous pitcher plants and other unique bog species while exploring the boardwalks of Mollie Beattie and Moose Bog, and then enjoy a beginner-friendly paddle via canoe on the placid waters of Lewis Pond, deep in the Nulhegan. Bring a bag lunch and warm layers. Canoes, paddles, pfds and transportation included in fee. Please register by April 23.

From Tree-to-Board: Felling, Log Extraction and Milling Demonstrations

Trees harvested in the Northeast Kingdom are often trucked out of state and never seen again. Is there another way to do it? Yes! During this day of field demonstrations, we’ll show small- scale, low-impact ways to turn trees into lumber right on your own land. Featuring Wood-Mizer portable bandsaw demonstrations by Martin Sawmilling of Sheffield and tractor logging tricks for minimizing residual stand damage.
