Ethan Lipton and His Orchestra
7:30 PM

Tickets: Adults - $32, $22, $14 Gold Circle - $38; Seniors - $29, $19, $11 and Gold Circle - $35; Students - $10

Lead New York Times theater critic Ben Brantley calls Ethan Lipton’s Obie Award-winning show No Place to Go “immensely appealing” for its hilarious satire about a nocturnal playwright whose temp day job as “information refiner” gets outsourced—to Mars. Lipton deftly channels the experience of “anyone who has stayed up nights worrying” about job security and paying the bills in a high-tech, bureaucratic, rapidly changing, outsourcing world. Part love letter to his co-workers, part query to the universe, part protest to company and country, No Place to Go delivers an irreverent and personal musical ode to the unemployed.

The songs of Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra are steeped in American traditions of jazz, blues, country, lounge—with modern subjects like internet romance, arts grants, pets, and police. It all adds up to a comical cockeyed view of an odd, disjointed age. PopMatters calls Lipton, "A sardonic voice that offers an unlikely kind of comfort against the vagaries of everyday life." Lipton is joined by his fabulous “orchestra” of Eben Levy (guitar), Ian Riggs (upright bass) and Vito Dieterle (sax), a trio that's been playing with him for over seven years. No Place to Go has the distinction of bring the first work ever commissioned by Joe’s Pub at New York’s Public Theater.

“Hilarious, twisted, sophisticated, schleppy and sad all at once … songs that take the mundane of life and twist it.” - NPR’s Weekend Edition

“Marvelous.” — London Times

“Entertainingly poignant. No narrator could be more appealing than the mustachioed Lipton." - The Village Voice

“Ethan Lipton is to lounge lizardry what Peter Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau is to policing, presenting his singular, funny-miserable take on life via jazzy, brass-festooned songs.” – Time Out, New York

“Disarming and deceptively seamless. He may not have a job, but, hey, he’s got rhythm.” – NY Times
