Appalachian Music and Jam
7:00 PM

Celebrate the musical roots of New England with Catamount's family-friendly night of Appalachian music. The evening will begin as Vicki Moore and Joe Godwin share some of their favorite Appalachian, country, gospel and original songs. Vicki plays mountain dulcimer and has performed with her daughters (some may remember "HomeSpun" when they were part of St. Johnsbury's 1st Night event). Joe has been playing guitar and writing songs for many years. Their vocals and instrumentals combine nicely to make heartfelt music that warms the soul and can get your feet to tapping. A "back porch style" jam will follow in which all types of folk instruments are welcomed. Musicians will gather in a circle and take turns choosing their favorite tune. Bring your instrument or just come to listen and make new friends!

You may well have already been enchanted by folk singer Julie Fowlis – and not know it. Her intoxicating and crystalline vocals on the soundtrack to Pixar’s 2012 animated film Brave helped spur international acclaim for her sublime talent.

But Fowlis’ position as one of the world’s most esteemed and celebrated Gaelic singers didn’t come overnight. It was earned over the last decade by producing four studio albums, exhaustively researching and reviving Gaelic songs – many from North Uist, in the Outer Hebrides where she grew up - and performing and collaborating extensively with artists such as Grammy-Award winning James Taylor, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Le Vent du Nord, and violin virtuoso Nicola Benedetti.

Nominated for BBC Radio 2’s 2015 'Folk Singer of the Year' award, and for 'Best Artist' at the 2015 Songlines World Music Awards, Fowlis has performed around the globe, from village halls in the Highlands, to theatres in Paris, Vienna, London and New York. Her live singing at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Glasgow XX Commonwealth Games played to a TV audience of more than 1 billion people. It would be easy enough for Fowlis to simply allow her audiences to be bathed in gorgeous Gaelic vocals (although even a mere 1% of Scots understand Gaelic). But her uniquely warm stage personality and explanations of each selection serve to draw audiences of all ages deeply into her world. It doesn’t hurt that Fowlis - a talented multi-instrumentalist - and her world-class backup band play such charming and fascinating instruments as the bouzouki, the tin whistle, and the shruti box.

International star Julie Fowlis and her band are traveling to the NEK from the Outer Hebrides! When you sit in Fuller Hall, awash in this exceptional and indelible music of the Scottish Isles, your trip from home will seem insignificant – and your mind will never be the same!

This is American fiction at its very best, a rip-roaring story full of hilarity and heartbreak. I finished it feeling better about myself and life in general. God’s Kingdom is the good stuff, the very best stuff, honest and emotionally resonant. Don’t miss it. (Stephen King)
