BURKE AREA EVENTS

50 Hikes North of the White Mountains

NorthWoods welcomes Kim Robert Nilsen, founder of northern New Hampshire’s Cohos Trail and author of the recently published collection of hikes in New Hampshire’s North Country, 50 Hikes North of the White Mountains. Kim will present a colorful slideshow of the many great mountains and trails situated in the Great North Woods of Coos County, New Hampshire, many of which are part of the 162-mile Cohos Trail — a rugged footpath through some of the most remote country in New England.

Chili Cookoff and Skate Jam

Join us for the 6th annual Chili Cookoff and Skate Jam - open to everyone. 

Try a variety of chilis cooked by community chefs and help choose a winner! There will also be a raffle, skate jam and other activities.

Admission for the chili cookoff is $5.00 to taste all the chilis. Soft drinks for sale.

The Nose





William Kentridge stormed the Met with his inventive production of Shostakovich’s opera, which dazzled opera and art lovers alike in its inaugural run in 2010. Now Paulo Szot reprises his acclaimed performance of a bureaucrat, whose satirical misadventures in search of his missing nose are based on Gogol’s comic story. Valery Gergiev conducts.

The Nose is a co-production of the Metropolitan Opera; the Festival d’Aix en Provence; and the Opéra National de Lyon.

From its early golden period under the leadership of Laurence Olivier at the Old Vic theatre to its now iconic building in the heart of London, the National Theatre has been home to Britain’s finest theatrical talent, premiering works by renowned writers such as Harold Pinter, Peter Shaffer, Tom Stoppard, Alan Bennett and David Hare, and staging celebrated performances by Maggie Smith, Derek Jacobi, Judi Dench, Michael Gambon and the rising stars of today.

From Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead to The History Boys, from The Mysteries to Angels in America, from Guys and Dolls to War Horse – Nicholas Hytner directs a thrilling evening of live theatre, with rare glimpses from the archive, featuring many of the original actors who have performed on the National’s stages over the past five decades.

Appalachian Pack Basket Making Workshop





Cost: $175, ($100 deposit), materials included. This is an amazing crafting opportunity. Andy Paonessa, a skilled craftsman and naturalist who has been making pack baskets for over 10 years, will provide step-by-step instructions for you to make your own sturdy Brown Ash pack basket, complete with cedar bottoms and skids, as well as canvas or leather straps. Andy will also supply all materials, which he gathers locally and processes by hand.

Processing the Brown Ash involves pounding the trunks in order to remove the annual growth rings into thin, flexible yet strong strips suitable for basket making. Registration and deposit required by October 31.

Puccini’s timeless verismo score is well served by an exceptional cast, led by Patricia Racette  in the title role of the jealous diva, opposite Roberto Alagna as her lover, Cavaradossi. George Gagnidze is the villainous Scarpia.

Tosca is a co-production of the Metropolitan Opera, the Bayerische Staatsoper and the Teatro alla Scala.

Into The Woods

This Tony Award winning musical brings together the classic tale of witches, wolves, and magic beans in a mystical adventure you will not want to miss!

When a baker and his wife learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, meeting up with a cast of well know characters from different fairy tales. The mysterious, and often dark, nature of the play provides new meaning to the phrase, "Be careful for what you wish." Performed by the Lyndon Institute Theater Company.

The Lyndon Holiday Shoppe is Opening Saturday, November 16th. Our new location is 724 Broad Street which is the Valero gas station mini-mart right beside the Miss Lyndonville Diner. We will be open from November 16th right through to December 24th - only closing for Thanksgiving Day.

Yaledale: Guiding the Future of a Multi-Aged Forest

Cost: free (Sponsored by Canaday Family Charitable Trust). Allen Yale’s 40+ years of forest stewardship were recently recognized when he was named as Northeast Regional Tree Farmer of the Year. In this tour, Allen and NorthWoods staff will show you what he has done to achieve this distinction, focusing on his use of “irregular forestry” (a European take on sustainable forestry, just now making its way to the US). An active forest worker himself, Allen will also show his tools-of-the-trade and discuss his ongoing management efforts
