Managing Forests with Wildlife in Mind

February 18, 2023  |   9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Free. Who’s making tracks on our fresh trails? While the NorthWoods trails are groomed for skiers and snowshoers, the surrounding forest is home to a variety of wild animals. On this guided tour of the Echo Lake Trail, we will visit forests and fields that have been intentionally managed to improve wildlife habitat. From bear-scarred beech trees to vernal pools to hayfield edges to timber harvesting with birds in mind, learn how NorthWoods and neighboring landowners have made the forest a better home for native wildlife.

This will be an intermediate-advanced tour, covering ~7.5 kilometers of groomed trails with substantial climbs and descents, best suited to experienced cross-country skiers and athletic snowshoers (a shuttle will be available at ~4km for a shorter tour). Please come prepared with appropriate clothing, water, and food. Bring your bag lunch for an informal discussion afterward in the NorthWoods lodge, or spend the afternoon exploring the trails on your own! Rental skis/snowshoes are available for $15/person.

Location: NorthWoods Stewardship Center, 154 Leadership Dr, West Charleston, VT Map it
