Writing About Harriet: The Story of a Family's Bonds of Affection with Harriet Tubman
7:00 PM

Northeast Kingdom resident Bob Amos explores his ancestors' multi-generational relationship with historical icon Harriet Tubman. Well known as a musician and songwriter, Bob has also pursued a passionate interest in family history. Bob's Auburn, New York ancestors were instrumental in preserving Tubman's legacy, writing the first biography and multiple articles about her during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Bob rediscovered some photographs of Tubman taken by his great aunt that had never been seen outside the family. In 2020 Bob's research on his family's connection to Harriet Tubman was published as a feature article in the national history and genealogy magazine American Ancestors. The photographs

of Harriet Tubman are being donated to the Library of Congress.

August Wilson’s “Two Trains Running”

Acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of “Fences,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and so much more, August Wilson’s “Two Trains Running” is the seventh installment of his trailblazing 10-part Century Cycle, or Pittsburgh Cycle.

In this masterpiece, history unfolds around everyday lives against the backdrop of the civil rights movement. Long-time regulars gather at the local diner in Pittsburgh’s Hill District to gossip, flirt and play the numbers. Now the owner must decide whether to let the city take over his building or sell it. August Wilson’s Two Trains Running paints an unforgettable portrait of ordinary people in the midst of transformation, exploring Black identity in the 1960s with passion and humor, demonstrating why Wilson remains one of America’s essential voices.

Tri-county Kids Ice Fishing Tournament

This weekend tournament gets kids out on the ice enjoying our frozen local lakes. A great way to include family and friends and introduce young ones to the sport, the weekend tournament culminates in a fish weigh-in and prize ceremony.

Brighton Recreation is gearing up for the annual Tri-County Kid’s Fishing Tournament. 250 Children from the Tri-County area have participated in this fishing tournament each year. Through the generosity of our sponsors, we have been able to provide an opportunity to learn the tradition of ice fishing in Vermont as well as provide prizes and trophies to participants to encourage their future involvement in a sport with dwindling numbers. This kid’s tournament has been a tradition for many of our participating families and allowed them to form life-long memories of being outdoors in the winter in Vermont.

Participants are able to fish any legal body of water in Caledonia, Essex and Orleans counties and fish for any legal species from those waters. Additionally, Vermont Fish and Game Officers are on hand at participant package pickup to answer questions and meet the children participating.

Donations are used to provide prizes, snacks, trophies and other engaging items to encourage children to participate and learn this great tradition. We hope you will consider being a part of this amazing event!

Registration begins in January
