Ladies of Hilltop

Coach Meridith “Mer” McFarland and Coach Laura Jenx look forward to welcoming you to Hilltop Haven on Friday, June 3 beginning at 4:30 pm. Upon your arrival, you’ll settle into your inviting room, socialize, and get to know others in the group. Chef Mike Daly is planning a delicious dinner and you’re invited to participate in a guided night ride that evening.
Enjoy the endless views that the Hilltop Haven has to offer during a sunrise yoga session Saturday morning, followed by a hot breakfast, and a private bike clinic in the expansive yard. After a lunch prepared by Chef Daly, we’ll hit the trails directly from the house to put the skills you learned in the morning to the test. Ready to kick your heels up after this eventful day? Revel in an après bike massage with Trail 2 Wellness! Happy Hour will begin at the house in the early evening, followed by dinner prepared by Chef Daly. We’ll end the evening next to the roaring bonfire, with views of Burke Mountain, to enjoy a s’mores treat, drinks, and take in the glorious sunset.
Prepare for another day on the trails with a sunrise yoga session Sunday morning, followed by a hot breakfast. We’ll hit the trails after breakfast and return to the house for lunch. After lunch, we’ll say our goodbyes and will look forward to gathering again next summer!

Walk in the Woods – Summer Bird Edition!
8:00 AM - 10:30 AM

Join Steve Hagenbuch, Senior Conservation Biologist and Forester with Audubon Vermont, on a bird-focused tour of the Pfalzerwald Tree Farm. Steve, who also serves on the VWA Board, works with private landowners, municipalities, foresters, and land managers to promote management activities that will enhance the habitat value
of forestland for priority bird species.

Listen and look for birds such as Hermit Thrush, Magnolia Warbler, and Canada
Warbler. Bring binoculars if you have them.
See how past forest management has enhanced bird habitat conditions

Light refreshments will be served after the walk. This is a field event (rain or shine) so dress accordingly. Mild to moderate hiking on rough trails is required. There is no charge for this workshop (Donations to the VWA/ Vermont Tree Farm Committee welcomed!), and no registration is required.

Map and Compass Workshop
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Knowing how to use a map and compass are crucial skills for any hiker. If you don’t know how to use a map and compass, then you are not only missing an essential skill when taking to mountains, but you could also be putting your life in danger.

This workshop will help you understand the information provided on a topographical map, the proper use of a compass, and how to put the two together. You’ll learn about magnetic north, true north, magnetic declination, and pairing a compass to a map. After covering these fundamentals, you’ll get an opportunity to practice orienteering skills in the woods around the Stewardship Center. This interactive workshop is a great introduction to navigation and map reading which are essential skills for anyone hiking trails or heading into the woods off-trail (bushwhacking).

The workshop will be led by Gordon DuBois, who is a member of the Green Mountain Club, Northeast Kingdom Chapter. Gordon has summited the Adirondack 46, the NH 48 in winter, the Northeast 111, was the 103rd person to summit the NE highest 100 in winter, and completed a winter traverse of the NH Presidential Range. He has also summited 451 of the highest peaks in New Hampshire and 65 in Vermont. The majority of these mountains in VT and NH are trailless and require the use of a map, compass, and GPS. He has also thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, the Long Trail, the Cohos Trail (NH) the John Muir Trail (CA), The IAT in Quebec, and the Bridger Range Trail in Montana.

Registration Deadline: June 6. Max participants: 10

All participants need to bring a compass, lunch, and wear appropriate clothing for an afternoon tramping in the woods. The workshop will be held rain or shine. Remember, ticks are out and about.
