Catamount Arts Bluegrass Night
7:00 PM

Catamount Arts Bluegrass Night, with hosts Bob & Sarah Amos, will present the acclaimed Vermont Roots, Folk and Bluegrass band LOW LILY on Saturday Dec 6 at Alexander Twilight Theater.

The popular series hosts Bob & Sarah Amos have been on a roll, with their current album reaching #1 on the national FolkDJ-L chart, and their song “The Hills That I Call Home” reaching # 1 on the Folk Alliance International chart. Their vocal blend has been called “mesmerizing”.

With the release of their 2023 album ‘Angels in the Wreckage’, the Vermont-based American Roots band LOW LILY has brought their infectious sound to a new level. With the energy of fiddle music, the introspective quality of contemporary folk, the precision of bluegrass, and the drive of Americana, the members of Low Lily (Liz Simmons, Flynn Cohen, and Natalie Padilla, plus bassist Hazel Royer) combine their individual talents into one stunning soundscape.

Low Lily has shared their signature sound with enthusiastic audiences throughout North America and the UK, garnering two #1 songs on international folk radio and two Independent Music Award wins. In 2018, the band released a full-length album with 2X award-winning title track “10,000 Days Like These” and their original song “Hope Lingers On”, which has been sung by choirs around the world as an anthem for peace and justice.

For their December 6 Bluegrass Night show, Low Lily will present their Winter Solstice show, celebrating the season with a mix of original and traditional songs, along with energetic instrumentals on fiddle, mandolin, and guitar. These shows capture the mood of the darkest time of year, often featuring themes of light and darkness.

As always, admission to Bluegrass Night is free, but donations will be gratefully received.

The Grand Kyiv Ballet is an independent touring ballet company of 30 Ukrainian ballet dancers from Kyiv, some of whom are temporarily operating from the International Ballet Academy in Bellevue, while in refuge from the Russian invasion of Ukraine – which has taken a toll on their company. The company works under the artistic direction of Oleksandr Stoianov, who was born in Crimea and engaged in ballroom dancing at the age of 10. Stoianov won 1st and 2nd places in local championships in ballroom dancing and this led him to enter the Kyiv State Choreographic School where he worked under the mentorship of revered Ukrainian dancer and choreographer, Vladimir Denisenko.

After graduating, Stoianov became a soloist for the National Opera of Ukraine and received invitations to work at the Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theater in St. Petersburg, the Bolshoi Theater, and the Berlin Opera. In the National Opera of Ukraine, Stoianov has performed the leading roles of nearly the entire repertoire.

Stoianov’s partner Katerina Kukhar (who performs in featured and soloist roles in the company) fled Ukraine with their family and is celebrated for her emotionally compelling performances.

This evening’s performance of The Nutcracker marks the first professional Northeast Kingdom performance of the Tchaikovsky classic in 40 years. The Nutcracker is a classical ballet in two acts, based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 fairy tale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” with music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The story follows a young girl, Clara, who receives a nutcracker doll as a Christmas gift. On Christmas Eve, the doll comes to life, battles an army of mice, and transports Clara to the Land of Sweets.

First Night North
4:00 PM

Catamount Arts and First Night North 2026 celebrate the 32nd year of Vermont’s favorite and longest running New Year’s Eve performance festival. Featuring over 150 performers in over 75 shows in a dozen St. Johnsbury venues, First Night North guarantees a full eight hours of fun for the entire community.

The eagerly anticipated festivities, presented by Catamount Arts in partnership with the First Night North committee and countless community supporters, will take place Wednesday, December 31st.. The fun begins at 4pm with early bird entertainment for all ages, including dance, live music, comedy, juggling, magic, planetarium shows, and longtime favorites the Family Fun Fair and pancake supper.

Celebrants with enough stamina for the full eight hours of live entertainment will have dozens of all-ages family-friendly shows to choose from, including storytellers, puppetry, vaudeville, hypnosis, and even more dance, magic, and music, culminating in a community countdown to the New Year, the raising of the First Night North Ball of Light, and a midnight dance party to welcome the New Year.

Musical acts include a wide range of soloists, duets, choirs, and bands offering nearly every imaginable genre: bluegrass, folk, jazz, Celtic, blues, R&B, Tibetan, contemporary, classic rock, and more. Although the schedule is still evolving, over a dozen brand new acts are anticipated in addition to longtime First Night favorites like Tritium Well, Marko the Magician and Hypnotist, and newer favorites like Silk and Spice Belly Dance, You’ve Got to be Kidding, and karaoke.

This year’s festivities will also include Reiki, Highland dance, marionettes, tarot readings, juggling, and a gallery show at Catamount Arts.

There will be plenty to eat throughout the festival, both indoors and out, as food trucks, community centers, and venues up and down Main Street prepare a variety of tasty vittles ranging from full dinners to desserts and snacks as well as First Night’s traditional and beloved pancake-and-sausage supper.

Patrons are encouraged as always to sample a variety of shows, and RCT’s electric buses will help by running free shuttle service among performance venues. Buses can be flagged down anywhere along the route.

New this year, First Night North committee is thrilled to announce free student admission thanks to generous community sponsors!
